What This Guide Covers
Yaman is associated with Kalyan Thaat and is recognized by its use of tivra Ma, the raised fourth degree. With Sa set to C, tivra Ma is F#. The other scale degrees in this introductory exercise are shuddh.
Raga practice is more than running a scale. Phrasing, approach notes, emphasis, ornamentation, and teaching tradition matter, and descriptions of the ascent may differ across lineages. This page is a keyboard-orientation exercise, not a complete account of Yaman.
Scale Structure
This site writes tivra Ma as Ṁ so that the apostrophe can remain an octave marker.
Aaroha-oriented exercise
Ni Re Ga Ṁ Pa Dha Ni Sa'
Avroha-oriented exercise
Sa' Ni Dha Pa Ṁ Ga Re Sa
Ga and Ni are common points of emphasis in introductory descriptions of Yaman. Listen to a teacher-led performance before trying to improvise from the scale.
Finding Tivra Ma on Web Harmonium
Open Web Harmonium, set Transpose to C, Octave to 3, and Notation to Sargam.
- In the first displayed octave, F#3 / Ṁ uses QWERTY key 4.
- In the second displayed octave, F#4 / Ṁ uses QWERTY key -.
- Natural Ma remains F and uses E in the first octave. Do not substitute it in this exercise.
For a simple Sa-to-Sa’ comparison, play:
| Sargam | Sa | Re | Ga | Ṁ | Pa | Dha | Ni | Sa’ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| QWERTY | backtick | Q | W | 4 | R | T | Y | U |
This comparison begins on Sa for keyboard orientation. A teacher may instead introduce Yaman through a lower-Ni approach and characteristic phrases.
Practice Sequence
- Alternate
Ma Ṁ Ma Ṁusing E and 4 so the half-step difference is clear. - Play
Re Ga Ṁ Paslowly using Q, W, 4, R. - Play
Pa Ṁ Ga Re Sausing R, 4, W, Q, backtick. - In the upper part of the displayed range, approach the next Sa from Ni with Y, U, I, O, -, [ for
Ni Sa' Re' Ga' Ṁ' Pa'. - Turn Sustain off while checking the pitches. Add light Sustain only after each note release is controlled.
Listening and Limits
Do not infer the whole raga from the eight-note pattern. Listen for how experienced performers approach Sa, dwell on Ga and Ni, and move through tivra Ma. A qualified teacher can correct intonation and explain which phrases belong to the tradition you are studying.

Reference
Yaman’s placement in Kalyan thaat follows V. N. Bhatkhande’s ten-thaat classification (Hindustani Sangeet Paddhati). For a documented survey description of Yaman, including its tivra Ma and evening association, see The Raga Guide (Nimbus Records with the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music, 1999), edited by Joep Bor. Performance practice still varies by lineage, so treat both as orientation rather than the last word.
